Adena Burial Mound

Did you know that there were Native American Indians living all over Ohio thousands of years ago? When their people died they put them on the floor of their hut, burnt it down, and covered them with dirt making a mound. When others died, they put them on the mound and covered them up, make the mound bigger and bigger. The mounds are all over Ohio. At Highbanks Metro Park they have two mounds made by the Adena people. They also have a wall built by the Cole Indians. That's right, the COLE INDIANS!

The park teacher took us out to the Adena mound. It is strange to have this grassy hill in the middle of the forest. No one has ever dug it up, so they don't know if there really are skeletons in there, but I'm sure there are!

We also learned about the kinds of tools the native people used and the artifacts scientists have found.
