Making Maple Syrup

This weekend the people at Slate Run Farm taught us how to make maple syrup.

1) Find yourself a sugar maple tree.
2) Put a spile in the trunk and let the sap drip into a bucket.
3) Boil off all the water in the sap until you are left with syrup.
4) Put on pancakes!

We got to see it all. First we hiked out to the sugar maple trees. Then we found a good one to tap. The sap tastes yummy coming right out of the tree!

Dad and I checked on some other nearby trees.

Near the farmhouse, we saw the big fire they use to boil off the water. Inside, we got to taste the maple sap, syrup, candy, and gingerbread.

After a cold afternoon at the farm, the warm car felt great!
